How to Use Jugs in Climbing

Jugs are one of the most beginner-friendly types of climbing holds due to their large, positive grip surface. Here’s how to use jugs effectively in climbing:

1. Grip Technique

  • Full-Hand Grip: Wrap your entire hand around the hold, using all fingers and your thumb. Jugs are designed to be gripped with a full-hand, making them secure and comfortable.
  • Open-Hand Grip: While not always necessary for jugs, using an open-hand grip can help conserve energy. Rest your hand on top of the hold without fully wrapping your fingers around it if the hold is large enough.

2. Body Positioning

  • Keep Your Center of Gravity Close: Maintain your body close to the wall to reduce the strain on your arms. This is especially important on overhanging routes.
  • Use Your Feet: Push with your legs as much as possible. Your legs are stronger than your arms, and using them efficiently will help you conserve energy.

3. Movement

  • Smooth Transitions: Move smoothly from one hold to the next, maintaining three points of contact (two feet and one hand, or two hands and one foot) to stay balanced.
  • Rest on Jugs: If you encounter jugs on a route, take advantage of them to rest. Shake out each arm alternately to reduce muscle fatigue.

4. Footwork

  • Precise Foot Placement: Place your feet precisely on footholds to ensure stability. Use the tips of your climbing shoes to gain the best grip.
  • Smearing: If there are no good footholds, use the friction of the shoe rubber against the wall (smearing) to maintain balance.
